I am excited about this next post. I have been wanting to go to this place for a long time now. Finally, the Ibaraki Eats Duo was able not only to visit this fantastic restaurant, but have a great experience. This place isn't your regular curry restaurant; it is a special and amazing curry place. Today, I will be talking about Spice Curry Trigger.

Spice Curry Trigger

Spice Curry Trigger is located in the Amakubo area of Tsukuba City. It is very close to where Thunder Burger used to be, which I wrote about, and I have to sadly report that it has closed its doors. If you plan to drive to Trigger, you should know that the parking area for the restaurant is not by the restaurant. The parking area is next to the driving school on the same street as the restaurant. Pull into the long parking lot next to the driving school and look for the cones that say Trigger on them. Those are the spaces for Spice Curry Trigger.
A few weeks ago, my wife and I parked our car at that very lot and took a short walk to get to Spice Curry Trigger. I was so excited. I have heard about Trigger from quite a lot of people, and all the pictures I saw on Instagram looked phenomenal. We both found the entrance to the restaurant and headed inside.

Inside

When we walked in, we were both automatically hit by a strong smell of curry. It was powerful. I was expecting this and was not thrown off by the smell. Trigger can hold a good number of customers. There is a good number of tables and chairs in the restaurant, which can fit up to maybe twenty customers. There is also a counter area by the kitchen to fit more people.
When we walked in, the staff led us to our table. Since we were a bit early for dinner, we had the restaurant to ourselves for a little while. We grabbed some lemon water that was near the entrance. Trigger is a self-serve water place. After we took in the atmosphere of this curry place, we grabbed the menu and checked it out.

The Menu

There are two menus at Spice Curry Trigger: the regular menu and the specials menu. Sorry to say that the menu is in Japanese only. The regular menu is a paper menu on a clipboard. The menu is mainly for the 2-flavor mixed curry or the 3-flavor mixed curry. The menu has steps on how to order your curry.
Step 1- Order your 2-flavor or 3-flavor mixed curry.
Step 2- Choose how much rice you want and what kind of rice you want. Either white rice or mixed grain rice (this is healthier).
Step 3- Add more toppings if you would like. Spiced egg, cheese, and or coriander.
Step 4- Choose if you would like a set with your curry. Either a drink set, a soup and salad set, or a Trigger set, which brings everything.

The specials menu is a blackboard menu that is on the wall near the table area of the restaurant. It changes every month so make sure to check it out.

Apple Cinnamon Chai

Before we get into the curry, I have to tell you that Trigger's special drinks and lassis are no joke. I ordered a regular lassi for myself, and it was creamy and delicious. My wife, on the other hand, ordered the special seasonal chai. The apple cinnamon chai. I liked my lassi, but this special chai was on a whole other level. Drinking my wife's chai was like drinking an apple pie, but with the smoothness and strong flavor that chai usually tastes like. I don't mean that negatively. This drink was amazing. It even went well with the curry that both my wife and I ordered.
Unfortunately, this chai was only available during November. I do hear that Trigger now has a sweet potato lassi for December. Sounds tasty to me.

3-Flavor Mixed Curry

My wife and I ordered the same curry, the 3-flavor mixed curry. On the menu, it is actually 3-flavor aigake curry. Aigake is putting things together, but they are not technically mixed. They are side by side but will mix later. Meaning the owner wants you to try separate flavors first and then mix them for a more fun and delicious experience. The curries change every month or so. Our curries were mushroom and Chinese cabbage with soy milk curry, keema curry, and butter chicken curry. We both got the mixed grain rice, which brought a lot of vegetables. There was also a pumpkin salad and a spiced egg. I wanted an extra spiced egg so my curry brought two spiced eggs.
Both of our Trigger curries looked like amazing works of food art. Everything on the plate was perfectly organized. I dug into the keema curry first and loved it. It was a pretty solid keema curry, and the mixed grain rice went very well with it. Not too spicy, but a nice kick to it. The butter chicken curry was Ok in my opinion. It could have been creamier, but it was not too bad. The real winner was the soy milk curry. That was a very creamy curry with so many mixed flavors and spices. It went so well with everything on the plate. I loved that curry. My wife was a big fan of the keema curry. She liked that it had more spice to it than the other curries on the plate.
The curries were fantastic, but the one thing that took my breath away was the spiced egg. I loved how eggs are cooked here in Japan. I need an aji tamago in my ramen whenever I go to a ramen restaurant. This spiced egg took me to a new level of Japanese egg cuisine. The hot spice that was on top and wrapped around the creamy yolk of that soft egg was something that to this day, I stare off into the distance dreaming about. I believe Trigger's spiced egg may be the best egg I have had this year.

After we finished our curry, we were full but not overly stuffed. We both felt nice and satisfied. The curry was great, the drinks are amazing, and the spiced eggs are something that should be revered by all food lovers. It was a lovely meal, and one we cannot wait to have again. We thanked the staff for a lovely meal and headed home.

So if you are in the mood for some fantastic curry and are around Tsukuba City, why not give Spice Curry Trigger a chance? Who knows? You will probably see us there in December. Trigger will be open for lunch and dinner every day, and my wife keeps saying that we are going back. Spiced eggs, here I come!
Enjoy!
