You look up at the clock from your work desk and see that it is almost lunch time. You only have one hour, sometimes even less for your lunch break. You didn't bring a bento or anything, so you have to go out and grab something quick before your lunch break is over. In Mito, there is one place that has sandwiches ready for anyone during their lunch hour to take out or eat in. That place is Daysmart.

Daysmart

Daysmart is located in the Bizenmachi area of Mito. It is close to the Mito Civic Center and right behind the Keisei department store.

I was in Mito for business one hot August morning and needed to grab a quick breakfast. I looked at Google Maps and saw that their was a sandwich shop nearby that opened at 9:30am. That is where I headed to start my day.

Inside

I found Daysmart and headed inside. Daysmart is a pretty small place. I think it can fit up to 10 maybe 12 people max. The tables and chairs are on the right side of the sandwich shop, but first you have to go to the counter and order your sandwich.

The Menu

There really isn't a menu at Daysmart per say. There is a glass display next to the register that shows what sandwiches and croissants are available. All the sandwiches and croissants' names are in Japanese, but if you look up at the black board, they do have the sandwich names in English.

Another thing I should mention is Daysmart doesn't have a lot of sandwiches or croissants ready during breakfast hours. I only had two choices available and coffee.

Breakfast

I decided on an ice cappuccino and an anko cream cheese croissant. The croissant wasn't too bad. It was an interesting combination with the sweet anko and the tangy flavor of the cream cheese. I was really impressed by the cappuccino though. It had a very strong and nice flavor of espresso and did the trick of waking me up that morning.

Breakfast was interesting but I really wanted to try one of their sandwiches. I made a note to come back during lunch time.

Lunch

5 hours later I was back at that glass display case, and this time there were way more sandwiches to choose from. I was a bit disappointed because Daysmart has a pastrami sandwich but it was sold out. So I went with the roast pork sandwich. I also got a set with fries, a drink, and potato salad. I sat down at one of the tables and waited.

Finally, my set came and I first worked on the side items. I was impressed with the salad and fries. The fries were fresh and pipping hot which is something everyone likes. The potato salad had everything a potato salad should have but with a coleslaw twist to it that was very nice. The coffee was an Americano. It was good, but I think my morning cappuccino was way better. Let's move onto the sandwich.

Roast Pork Sandwich

A good solid sandwich. The vegetables were nice and fresh and the sauces complimented the pork. I do wish there was a bit more meat in it. What really surprised me was the bread. It felt like I was eating a giant pretzel. In fact, I was pretty sure this was pretzel bread. I love pretzels so this was a very nice surprise. The bread had that golden brown color on the outside which gives it a nice hardness when you bite into it. The inside was very nice and soft, just like a pretzel should be. I couldn't stop eating this sandwich and was contemplating on getting another, but unfortunately I had to get back to work.

Daysmart was an interesting sandwich experience with a bread that I still remember fondly till this day. I hope to go back sometime soon and try their other sandwiches. Especially the pastrami sandwich or the salmon sandwich.

So if you are in a lunch rush in Mito and need a sandwich to hold you over, why not head over to Daysmart? Who knows, you might see me there, finally trying the pastrami sandwich and admiring that amazing bread.

Enjoy!
