A Bakery and Burger Joint

This place has a good selection of bread, and they make burgers.

Hello fellow Ibarakians!
Today’s post is a bit of an unusual one. Last week, I talked about burgers, and today I’ll be covering another burger spot. However, this isn’t exclusively a burger place—it’s actually a restaurant and bakery in Mito. So the question is: do both concepts work well together? And if not, which is better, the restaurant or the bakery?

R Baker

R Baker is located in the Senbacho area of Mito City. It’s not very accessible by train, as Mito station is quite far, so coming by car, bus, or bike is your best option. The bakery and restaurant are part of a small shopping center that includes a Kasumi supermarket, a post office, and several other stores.
If you’re driving, make sure to enter the shopping center’s parking area, as I did. Although R Baker sits along Route 50, it shares the same parking lot as the Kasumi supermarket. After finishing my errands in Mito, I decided to stop by R Baker for lunch. I parked my car near the post office and made my way inside.

Inside

When I walked inside, I was greeted by a bakery area filled with rows of delicious-looking bread on display. There was also a small refrigerator section stocked with cold sandwiches and cream-filled breads. As I walked past, I took a moment to check out all the tempting options behind the glass display case.
I planned to grab some bread before leaving, but first, it was time for lunch.
Once you pass the bakery area at R Baker, you’ll find the ordering counter, where you place your order before heading to one of the many tables and chairs spread throughout the spacious dining area. If you prefer a more relaxed atmosphere, there are also a few sofas with tables available. I walked up to the counter and took a look at the menu.

The Menu

I have some bad news and some good news about the menu. The bad news is that it’s mostly in Japanese, but the good news is that there are plenty of pictures explaining what’s available.
The drink menu includes helpful visuals showing the ratio of espresso to milk for each type of coffee. As for the food, the menu features burgers, pasta, and salads, along with a waffle section for dessert.
I decided to order the cheese avocado burger and took a seat on one of the comfy-looking sofas in the dining area.

Cheese Avocado Burger

I waited a few minutes before my number was called. I walked up to the pickup counter and grabbed my burger. I forgot to mention this, but R Baker was at Burger Baka last week. They had a tent with a menu filled with a bunch of different burgers. I was way too full by the time I got to their tent, so I vowed to go to their restaurant and try their burger. Here I was a few days later, ready to give their burger a chance.
So, what is there to say about it? I don’t usually like being negative on this blog, but a few things need to be said about both the burger and my experience on the restaurant side of R Baker.
The burger was… a burger, in the most basic sense. It wasn’t terrible, but it definitely wasn’t good either. The patty, despite being covered in cheese, lacked flavor. It’s an area where R Baker could really improve. The guacamole was also disappointing—it made the burger slippery and messy, and didn’t add much when it came to taste. With every bite, it felt like I was dealing with a somewhat bland, unbalanced combination.
The buns, however, were the saving grace. They were soft, fresh, and had that nice, just-baked flavor you’d expect from a bakery. Unfortunately, that wasn’t enough to elevate the burger as a whole. Honestly, it’s not something I’d order again.
I went back and forth on whether to include this next part, but I think it’s important to mention. The sofa I sat on had crumbs scattered across the seat, and the table hadn’t been properly cleaned. I also noticed staff lingering around the ordering counter rather than attending to the dining area. Normally, I wouldn’t be too bothered by this—and I understand that service standards vary by country (especially my country)—but in Japan, this kind of experience can leave a poor impression and have Japanese customers not want to visit R Baker again.
After finishing my underwhelming burger, I decided to pick up a variety of baked goods to try at home. My wife wasn’t able to join me to try R Baker, so I brought some back for her as well.

Cheese Hot Dogs

As I mentioned earlier, I brought some baked goods home for my wife. That night, I made a simple salad for dinner and brought out the cheese hot dogs I had picked up from R Baker. My wife was excited to try them.
After taking a bite, I have to say—R Baker really does make some tasty bread. The hot dog buns were soft, warm, and had that fresh, just-baked flavor that the burger buns had. The cheese paired nicely with the bread, and at first, it seemed like a winner.
But unfortunately, just like with the burger, R Baker dropped the ball when it came to the meat. The hot dog itself was surprisingly bland, which was pretty disappointing. The buns were excellent, but the hot dog didn’t live up to the same standard.
It makes me wonder if R Baker knows what seasoning and sauces are for. Those will most likely make a big difference. So far, R Baker had been a disappointing sandwich, but with tasty bread. The next item I tried helped make up for some of that disappointment.

Cheese Bread

The next morning, we decided to have the cheese bread with our coffee. I reheated it in the microwave, tore it in half, and we each enjoyed it with a café latte. I have to say—that was a great breakfast.
The bread was soft and fluffy, and the cheese was just right. My favorite part was the bottom, where a layer of fried cheese had formed. It paired perfectly with the bread, delivering a satisfying crunch alongside rich, cheesy flavors, all balanced by the bread's light, airy texture. It came together as a simple but delicious baked treat. I would definitely buy this cheese bread again.

R Baker still has a few things to work on—especially when it comes to their meats—but I genuinely enjoyed the bread they offer. The bakery/restaurant also has a nice atmosphere overall (aside from the messy tables). I’d definitely go back to try more baked goods or sandwiches. As for the restaurant side, I’m still on the fence about giving it another chance.

So, if you find yourself in Mito and are in the mood for some tasty baked goods, why not give R Baker a try? Who knows? You might see me there, picking up more bread and definitely getting another cheese bread.
Enjoy!
